I am delighted that we have managed to secure a small allocation of this wonderful wine on release. Champagne Taittinger created the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs in 1952 to sit at the top of their range, in honour of the Comtes de Champagne. Only made in the best vintages, and from chardonnay sourced from the five prestigious, grand cru villages of Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger, it is characterised by its great precision, intensity and finesse.
Order by midday on 13th October
The 2013 vintage began with a hot and dry spring; however, a cooler August and September meant that it was one of the last to have been harvested in October, allowing for slow maturation of the grapes.
With 95% of the blend fermented in stainless steel to keep that precision, 5% is fermented in oak to add a little seasoning to the final blend. The wine spent 10 years in the chalk cellars before disgorgement.
On release it has immediate appeal and an extremely complex perfume with fresh almonds, patisserie cream, green apple and lemon. These notes continue on the bright, tight palate that is lifted by welcome acidity and the pinprick mousse. A long puff-pastry, walnut and apple-scented finish really points to the quality of this wine, and hints of the promise it will offer the patient – if you choose to age this further.
A special wine for celebrations now or over the next decade.
