Gérard Gauby’s wines, from a remote corner of the Roussillon, are widely considered among the greatest of southern France, and appear in many of the world’s top restaurants. This First Release features vintages that have not been made available before, including the 2023 Vielles Vignes red and white, and the 2024 vintage of his Calcinaires wines. When I visited the estate late last year, I was bowled over by the wines. Gérard, who has been making wine for decades, described the 2023 vintage as the vintage that he has dreamt of making all his working life – wines with perfect balance, with everything in harmony (sans excès, were his words).

The vines – many more than 100 years old – are planted on a rich diversity of soil types and are tended biodynamically. Winemaking is simple and non-interventionist, rarely needing to fine or filter, and with minimal use of sulphur. They display remarkable finesse and precision, somehow reminiscent of cool-climate wines, despite coming from the hottest wine-growing area in France.
