First release: Dona Antónia Ferreira 2023

One of the Douro’s great historic estates, Quinta do Vesuvio was transformed in the 19th century by the remarkable Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, who invested heavily in the property and its vineyards during some of the most difficult years in the region’s history. Today Vesuvio remains one of the great names of the Douro Superior. The 2023 growing season benefited from replenished water reserves and a relatively moderate summer, before rain complicated the latter stages of harvest, making careful selection crucial. Only a small volume of this 2023 was made. Beautifully expressive, it combines purple fruit and violet perfume with notes of lavender and a subtle wild, meaty complexity. Juicy and punchy, but with impressive detail and definition, the palate is framed by beautifully refined tannins and finishes with freshness and poise. Drink from 2027 to 2043. 14%

Casa Ferreirinha grew directly from the family wine business led and transformed by the remarkable Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira in the 19th century, with her heirs continuing the company after her death under the affectionate nickname 'Ferreirinha', the name by which she had become known. Castas Escondidas, meaning ‘hidden varieties’, continues that pioneering spirit, celebrating lesser-known Douro grapes including tinta francisca, touriga fêmea, bastardo and marufo, alongside old-vine field blends. Winemaker Luís Sottomayor described 2023 as an outstanding year, producing fruit of excellent maturity and intensity. Fragrant and elegant, with fresh red and black fruits, violet, white pepper and clove, alongside a subtle forest-floor savouriness. The palate is polished and velvety, with smooth tannins, bright acidity and a long, refined finish. Drink from 2027 to 2038. 13.5%

The top wine from one of Portugal's greatest wine estates, founded by the legendary Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, the visionary figure who helped shape the modern Douro. The 2023 is a fitting continuation of that legacy. Aromas of black cherry, cassis, violet and sweet spice rise from the glass, underpinned by an impressive sense of depth and concentration. The palate is powerful but refined, with layers of dark fruit, graphite and savoury spice framed by polished tannins and beautifully integrated oak. Foot trodden in granite lagares and matured in French oak, this is a benchmark Douro red with the structure, complexity and pedigree to reward long ageing. Drink from 2027 to 2043. 14%
