Torbreck ‘The Steading’ 2022

An Australian classic at a remarkable price

Torbreck ‘The Steading’ 2022

This is my favourite vintage to date of this Barossa blend of grenache, shiraz and mataro (aka mourvèdre). Thanks to a favourable exchange rate, I’m also delighted to be able to offer it to members at an even lower price than the 2018 vintage that we first sold to members four years ago!

Tasting the 2022 for the first time was an immediate ‘wow’ moment. As soon as my nose entered the glass, I found myself thinking that this is what iconic Australian wine should be all about: generosity, finesse, charm – at once sophisticated and yet entirely unpretentious.

Torbreck are known for their full-throttle style, but the 2022 shows notable elegance. Its deep, complex layers of aroma and flavour outshine the narrative of the vintage. What it lacks in the full-on flashiness of 2021, it makes up for with class, restraint and detail. It is one of a good handful of 2022s that have surprised me, very pleasantly indeed, by being preferable to the lauded 2021s which came before.

The aromatic profile of The Steading 2022 is alluring, with earthy bramble, a hint of tar, rich plush leather and peppery cassis character. The palate is plush, succulent and generous. There are no rough edges, but no lack of generosity either. A full-bodied, serious, intricate and particularly classy wine.

It is well worth a good hour in a decanter if enjoying it young. There is, however, no rush: tuck this smart red away for a few years and enjoy opening bottles as it evolves over time. My only hope is that there’s some left for me!
