The Beaujolais Cru Collection
Wines included
The Society's Exhibition Fleurie 2023
Attractive, floral Fleurie, in keeping with its name, with vibrant red-fruit notes on the palate. Lovely crunchy fresh fruit with a long finish.
The Society's Exhibition Côte de Brouilly 2023
The 2023 Côtes de Brouilly is a serious vintage, with structure and minerality, capturing the generous purity of fruit from the vintage with freshness, structure and elegance. At 320ha this is one of the smallest of the crus but it has a strong personality. It is an oval-shaped hill with vineyards at all points of the compass, including one called La Glacière (the glacier) on the north-facing slope. Whilst most Beaujolais comes from soils of pink granite, the Côte de Brouilly`s soils are principally bluish, composed of diorite, an igneous rock of a bluish grey colour with a green cast, together with some schist and granite. Its wines are structured, mineral and age worthy. This is a blend of two wines. One was selected for its wonderfully ripe, richly fruity, concentrated and creamy texture, blended this with a more structured and mineral wine which contributed some underlying freshness and improved the length of flavour. Try with beetroot roasted with shallots, garlic and thyme.
Juliénas Stéphane Aviron, 2022
Juliénas, a revered Cru in France yet still somewhat underappreciated in the UK, finds an exceptional ambassador in Stéphane Aviron’s exquisite example. Ripe red fruit, fragrant and charming with subtle floral notes of violet. Beautifully balanced with fine tannins and refined acidity making it wonderfully approachable now. A true delight that showcases the best of Juliénas.
Fleurie Colonies de Rochegrès, Château de Beauregard 2023
From a superb vineyard with some very old vines, bordering Moulin-à-Vent. The wine has the scented elegance of Fleurie and the richness and body of a Moulin-à-Vent. Polished and very classy. Impressive structure, with ripe berry fruit, white pepper and fine, ripe tannins.
Saint-Amour Côte de Besset, Domaine Joseph Burrier 2023
From a 1ha vineyard planted on the first high hill in Beaujolais, on volcanic soils, this is a fragrant, finely textured wine with pure notes of berry and quince fruit and a hint of spice on the palate. Juicy, fresh and a perfect pairing with charcuterie.
Chiroubles, Domaine Dominique Piron 2023
From high-altitude vines on pure granite soils and with north exposure comes this remarkably appealing Chiroubles. The 2023 is extremely fresh and mineral in style, with masses of crunchy cherry and raspberry fruit and a mesh of very fine tannin. This definitely lends itself to being served up slightly chilled alongside some charcuterie, seared tuna or salmon.
The Society's Exhibition Moulin-à-Vent 2019
Following the success of our limited 150th anniversary release last year, we decided to bottle some more of this exquisite Beaujolais under our exhibition label range. Moulin-à-Vent is considered by many to be the king of the Beaujolais crus, and its top wines historically commanded similar prices to grand cru red Burgundy. Thankfully for the consumer, if not the producers, that is no longer the case. Just under 10% of the wine was aged in small oak barrels of three to four years which adds to the texture and structure of the wine on the palate. The 2019 vintage produced excellent wines in Beaujolais, with the gamay grapes reaching optimal ripeness, but without losing the freshness that makes cru Beaujolais wines. The wine, which is perfectly ready for drinking now, has mid-ruby colour and a nose of brambles and dried herbs. Perfect with charcuterie, roast chicken or goose, or a mushroom ragout.
Brouilly, Domaine des Coteaux de Font Curé 2024
From a high-altitude vineyard, this tastes more like a Côte de Brouilly with its intense, brambly fruit character and silky texture. Attractive, well-priced cru Beaujolais from a great, classic and fresh vintage.
Moulin-a-Vent La Rochelle, Jean-Paul Brun 2022
Jean-Paul Brun’s ‘La Rochelle’ vineyard sits on high slopes of pink granite soil, where the cooler breezes enhance the wine's natural freshness. The soil is also rich in manganese, naturally limiting yields and producing more concentrated berries. The result is a wine of impressive depth and finesse, showcasing intense red cherry and blackcurrant fruit alongside delicate violet aromas.
Chénas , Stéphane Aviron 2023
From a classic and fresh vintage this is a fresh, ripe and perfumed cru Beaujolais from very vines planted more than100 yeas ago. Displays good fruit density, with notes of kirsch. Supple and silky textured. from very old vines, the youngest of which were planted in 1913 on red granite soils.
Morgon Château Gaillard, Domaine Romanesca 2023
Twins Olivier and Antoine Chastel took over their father's vineyards in 2019 and are making authentic, classic Cru Beaujolais. Their Morgon is intensely perfumed with notes of crushed raspberries and kirsch. Pleasure in a glass.
Régnié, Domaine de la Margot 2024
Bright raspberry core and the supple charm typical of Beaujolais' most recently recognised cru. From a 3-hectare plot in Régnié, this is juicy, firm and fresh, with delicate notes of violet and peony.
