Bargylus Grand Vin Rouge 2016

5.000000000 star rating 2 Reviews
Our first Syrian wine, from Syria's only private wine estate in the north western port of Latakia. A syrah, cabernet and merlot blend that offers exuberant berry fruits combined with wild herbs and black olive and savoury spice notes with chalky, structured tannins. The Saadé brothers set up a winery without any winemaking experience, and planted their first vines in the early 2000s. Due to conflict in the country, the brothers live in Beirut and communicate remotely with their team, with help from their wine consultant, Stéphane Derenencourt.

Deep, mature ruby. Lovely evolution on the nose. This has such poise and interest. It’s not light but everything is in balance. Perfect for a blind tasting! Exotic layer upon layer. Good value.

Still a fairly deep crimson. Heady, richly spicy nose that recalls some reds grown in nearby Lebanon. Powerful but balanced and with a streak of sweet balsamic running through it (but it's not remotely vinegary!). Tannins nicely receded and sufficient acidity. JancisRobinson.com
