Beaujolais Villages Blacé 'La Pointe', Domaine de Mont Joly 2022
Blacé is an important village in the Beaujolais Villages zone of the region, which could in future years see elevation to cru status; there is a complex mosaic of soil types here including granite, diorite and limestone – almost a microcosm of the larger region. 2022 was ‘a big vintage’ according to grower Jean-Baptiste Bachevillier and as such he only released La Pointe 2022 this year; it is also the first year he used amphora for the maturation of this wine. Full-bodied for Beaujolais, this is silky and supple and generously fruited with concentrated red plums and a spicy, liquorice lift. Jean-Baptiste is a young grower farming just under five hectares of vines – mostly in Blacé – with organic and agroforestry-inspired methods. While he is the eighth generation of his family to make wine, he is the first since 1873 to own his vines – something he achieved before he was 30!
