Big and Spicy Reds Case
Wines included
Faugères Premières, Domaine Bardi d'Alquier 2021
Despite new ownership, the style at this iconic Faugères estate remains unaltered. This cuvée brings together syrah and grenache, mostly from young vines, barrel-aged for a year, but no new oak. It is Rhône-like, balanced with a touch of spice and ripe black cherry.
Côtes-du-Rhône Rive Droite Rive Gauche 2024
A fruit-forward, juicy and quaffable red. The name was conjured up because this wine is sourced from both banks of the Rhône, with the grenache coming mainly from the left and the syrah from the village of Daumazan, near the Pont du Gard, on the right bank. A great value red that can be enjoyed with or without food. Perfect pairing with barbecued meats and pizza.
Stonedance Hutton Red, Piekenierskloof 2025
A 2026 Wine Champion, where as one taster said, ‘in a line-up of fruity, charming reds, this just had a bit more depth.’ A bramble-packed South African blend of shiraz, mourvèdre, cinsault and carignan, this comes from an amazing vintage. Others praised its ‘pure, vibrant fruit’, ‘lovely dark berries’ and friendly tannins.
The Society's Rioja Crianza 2021
Rioja is Spain's pre-eminent wine region, renowned for its graceful, stylish wines, mainly from the tempranillo grape. The Society's Rioja is made in the classic, traditional style that Society members so adore by Bodegas Palacio, who are based in the spectacular fortified village of Laguardia. Ageing in oak for 15 months results in a smooth, mellow and juicy tempranillo with red-fruit flavour complemented by hallmark savoury, leathery complexity. The ageing of wine in barrels is absolutely integral to winemaking in Rioja, and our new label for this member favourite pays homage to the cooperage tools that are used to make these traditional vessels.
Silbador Carmenère 2024
Round and plummy Chilean carmenère from organic vineyards. One of our Wine Society Pioneers of wine production that is as sustainable as possible, the inspirational eco-friendly Emiliana focuses on maintaining healthy, living soils in all their vineyards, through sustainable agronomic practises. The result is that their vineyards teem with natural life, a perfect blend of predators and prey that forms a balanced vineyard ecosystem. The ‘Silbador' itself is an insect-eating bird found in the vineyards whose presence means that Emiliana do not have to use pesticides on their vines and other crops. Certified Carbon Neutral for the first time in 2008, Emiliana are now IMO, BCORP and Fairtrade certified too. People are important here. with staff guaranteed fair wages and treatment, college scholarships, allotments, profits from the sale of the produce of vineyard beehives and olive groves. Local schools are provided with computer and internet access. It's wonderful stuff.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Gran Sasso 2025
Packed with bright, juicy brambly fruit, red cherry and plum, with savoury spice notes bringing complexity, this Italian red is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Plush and generous with montepulciano's signature freshness to balance the sweet ripe-fruit character.
