Bilancia La Collina Hawke's Bay Syrah 2024
Red Wine from New Zealand - Hawkes Bay
The La Collina vineyard sits on the prized north and northwest-facing slopes of Roy's Hill, one of the few hillside sites in an otherwise notably flat region, and its upper terraces are dedicated to syrah. In 2024, the cool spring led to low yields, but the resulting wines are superb: aromatic, vibrant and finely structured. La Collina is deeply expressive, with layers of black fruit, violet, cracked pepper and spice, all in effortless equilibrium. It’s a wine of stature and poise that will evolve gracefully in bottle, and while it needs a few years in the cellar before opening, it would be a mistake to miss it. A true icon of New Zealand wine, Bilancia’s La Collina is considered by many to be New Zealand's greatest cult syrah. Production is minuscule, and it’s a rare privilege to secure enough for Wine Society members. The project is the personal venture of Trinity Hill’s Warren Gibson, an undisputed master of syrah in Hawke’s Bay and whose philosophy of balance, harmony and precision is central to every bottle. The name Bilancia is the Italian word for 'balance' and reflects this ethos, as well as being the Italian word for the Libra star sign, under which both Warren and his partner Lorraine were born.
