Blandy's Verdelho 1987
A beautifully poised expression of verdelho that perfectly balances maturity with freshness. The nose is lifted and precise, offering notes of dried pineapple, mango skin, straw and citrus peel, underpinned by gentle nuttiness and spice from long ageing. For those unfamiliar with aged Madeira, this is a wonderful introduction to one of the wine world's most distinctive and rewarding styles. The palate is sleek yet beautifully textured, combining maturity and richness with remarkable focus and energy. Layers of tropical fruit, salted nuts and orange zest unfold before a surge of mouthwatering acidity takes hold, carrying the wine to a long, saline finish. Uniquely, Madeira is effectively indestructible once opened, allowing you to enjoy a small glass at a time over many months without worrying about oxidation. A fascinating and delicious wine and one of the greatest stylistic gifts to the world of wine. Very special indeed.
