Clos de Luz Agras País 2023

Red Wine from Chile - Rapel
0 star rating 0 Reviews
País is on trend but a good one is hard to find in my experience. It is thought to be listán negro, aka known as mission in California, which originated in Castile but was widely planted in the Canary islands from where, in the 16th century, settlers on their way to Chile took cuttings This is light and balanced with pretty strawberry fruit. 100 year old vines interplanted with about 10% moscatel. 10 months maturation in 500l barrels.

From an old vineyard of País with scattered Moscatel plants this has top herbal notes of oregano, thyme, sage over strawberry and cherry. Structured, yet so playful, with mineral zesty tannins. A great expression of what Pais can be, polished but without avoiding the grape's inherent rusticity. Great persistence with a earthy, Earl Grey edge.

Agras uses a field blend of grapes from 100-year-old vines in the Cachapoal Valley, combining País and 10% Moscatel de Alejandría. Fermented with 20% whole bunches, it’s refreshingly low in alcohol at 12.5%, with jasmine and rose petal aromas, impressive underlying grip and concentration and a palate of redcurrant, cranberry and rooibos tea.
