Chateau Léoville Las Cases
Château Léoville Las Cases is among the largest of the Médoc classified growths, with a long history to match, and is arguably the leading estate in St-Julien. At one time part of the greater Domaine de Léoville estate of the 18th century it was divided in to three separate estates between 1826 and 1840. 97 hectares of vines grow on classic gravelly sand and clay soils, wonderfully situated close to the Gironde estuary, dominated by cabernet sauvignon with merlot and cabernet franc in support. Léoville Las Cases has been owned by the Delon family since 1976, and today the estate is managed by Jean-Hubert Delon who succeeded his father Michel in 2000. Michel had been manager in the 1970s when the estate regained the quality and reputation that its enormous potential deserves. In 2007 the château established its second wine, Lion du Marquis. Though many think that Clos du Marquis, introduced as far back as 1902, is a seond wine it comes, in fact, from vines that were not historically part of the estate for the grand vin and the wine has always been regarded as standing on its own as a Saint-Julien.
