London Black Nitro Porter, Anspach & Hobday, Bermondsey
This is silky, creamy and a sure-fire hit for any lover of the famous Irish pint but who may prefer to support a small independent business. There's remarkable depth of flavour here, with dark chocolate, mocha, and beautifully balanced bitterness. A triumph from London, the true home of stouts and porters. Anspach & Hobday initially made a name for themselves by winning awards for the quality of their dark beers but we believe this is their best yet. Having seen a gap in the market for a porter which offers the same creamy texture as Guinness, but with a fuller, more generous and complex flavour, they set to work creating London Black. A huge success in pubs around the country, it is only recently that they have been able to access the technology required to capture the smooth, pub-like draught pour in cans, making it possible to enjoy at home, but serve it chilled to avoid gushing on opening!
Export India Porter, The Kernel Brewery, Bermondsey 330ml
The Kernel’s Export India Porter is a brilliant revival of a historic style, blending the roasted depth of a porter with the hoppy vibrancy of an IPA. Expect layers of dark chocolate, coffee and burnt sugar, lifted by earthy hoppy notes. It’s dry, complex and deeply satisfying, with a firm bitterness and a lingering finish. A unique and characterful beer that shows The Kernel at its thoughtful, understated best.
Festbier, Braybrooke Brewery, Northamptonshire 330ml
Braybrooke’s Festbier is the brewery’s take on a classic Märzen, the amber lager traditionally brewed in spring and served in autumn at Oktoberfest. True to style, it’s rich, malty and smooth, with layers of toasted bread, caramel and a gentle herbal lift from German hops. The mouthfeel is full but refined, with a clean, dry finish that makes it very moreish. Brewed with a nod to Bavarian tradition, this seasonal release is both celebratory and seriously drinkable. Perfect as the evenings get colder, with roast dinners and drinking songs. Lederhosen not included.
Smoked Lager, Braybrooke Brewery, Northamptonshire 330ml
Inspired by traditional Franconian rauchbier, Braybrooke's smoked lager offers gentle notes of beechwood smoke wrapped around a core of clean, bready malt and herbal hops. The smokiness is present but never overpowering, giving a savoury lift to the crisp, refreshing finish. Fermented low and slow with bottom-fermenting yeast, this is a lager that’s both characterful and incredibly drinkable. Perfect with grilled meats, smoked cheese or just enjoyed on its own, this is an English take on a classic German style and to be Franc(onian) its just delicious.
Organic Scotch Ale, Black Isle Brewery, Scotland 330ml
Black Isle Brewery’s Organic Scotch Ale is a rich, full-bodied expression of Scotland’s traditional ale style, brewed with organic malts and hops from the Highlands. Deep mahogany in colour, it offers aromas of toasted malt, treacle and dried fruit, with a hint of peaty smokiness. The palate is smooth and warming, with flavours of caramel, dark chocolate and roasted nuts, balanced by a gentle bitterness and a dry finish. Complex but easy-drinking, this is a satisfying ale for cooler days, and a fine showcase of Black Isle’s commitment to flavour, sustainability and organic farming. Best served lightly chilled.
