David & Nadia 2023 Chenin Blanc Mixed Case

From a single vineyard planted in 1968 just west of Malmesbury on deep red iron and clay-rich soils this is the coolest site husband and wife team, David and Nadia Sadie work with, and the long growing season is shown in the wine. Tight, mealy and mineral this is like a tinderbox waiting to ignite with amazing concentration and a power that builds and builds. These wines are famed for their bone-dry firmness in their youth so we highly recommend maturing for at least another few years before opening. David Sadie, the David of David & Nadia, describes Plat'bos, a single vineyard located just over a dirt road from Skaliekop, as 'unforgiving' thanks to its desolate granitic soils and warm, north-facing aspect. It's also a fairly apt way to describe the wine in its youth. Planted in 1981 it's the first vineyard to be picked with three separate passes in the first few weeks of February each of which are fermented and aged separately before blending. The result is an incredibly taut and acid-driven style of chenin with a lean, lithe body at only 11% alcohol. Older vintages of this wine show its potential to build amazing weight and richness, but patience is required. If you enjoy serious acidity this can be poured now, otherwise it might be best to leave it until 2027 to let it unwind. From a single vineyard on a combination of shale and decomposed granite on the Paardeberg mountain planted in 1985. Fermented and aged in old neutral French oak barrels this is more approachable and riper in style than the Hoë-Steen with aromas and flavours of tropical fruit and a pithy, grapefruit skin finish on the palate.
