Half bottle of Château d'Yquem, Sauternes 2016

White Wine from France - Bordeaux
0 star rating 0 Reviews
2016 was a lovely vintage for Sauternes. A wet winter and spring were followed by the driest summer since 1898. This could have stressed the vines, but the deep clay subsoil in the vineyard acted as a sponge, storing reserves of winter rainfall to supply the vines throughout the drought conditions. The best Sauternes vintages require moisture to trigger the onset and development of the ‘noble rot` that gives the wines their character and flavour complexity. In 2016 there were well-timed rain showers in the middle and end of September which encouraged this process. Harvesting took place in 4 tries (or passes through the vines) between the end of September and the beginning of November. A blend of 75% semillon and 25% sauvignon, the resulting wine is beautifully harmonious with nuanced, medium-weight fruit and fine balance. With sugar levels marginally lower than in 2015 (by 6%), the wine has a gorgeous nose of peach and apple blossom with classic notes of acacia, citrus fruits and just a hint of honey.
