Half Bottle of Essencia, Royal Tokaji 2017
White Wine from Hungary - Hungary
One of the rarest wines produced, Essencia is referred to as the 'liquid gold' that slowly comes from Aszú (dried, botrytised) grapes. Painstakingly low quantities are produced – only 4,770 bottles in 2017 – with a sweetness of 557 grams/ litre (more than 3.5 times that of Sauternes) and only fermented to 2% alcohol. Only the finest berries that had Aszú are harvested in the autumn and were placed into containers where the free run juice was released and then slowly fermented over three years to produce this incredible nectar. There is an intensity of candied peel, marmalade and quince with plenty of ginger, saffron and passionfruit. Unctuous and sweet, yet the acidity pierces through to bring vibrancy and electricity to the palate. This Essencia comes with a crystal spoon, a more practical way to serve this historic wine.
