Hay Shed Hill Pitchfork Margaret River Shiraz 2021

2.714285600 star rating 7 Reviews
While Margaret River may be better known for its cabernet sauvignon, there is fantastic shiraz to be had here too and this is a perfect example of that. With perfumed blackcurrant and plum on the nose and great concentration on the palate, coupled with firm tannins and freshness, this is an exceedingly classy wine at the price. Due to the Australian wine glut caused by the imposition of Chinese tariffs we have been offered this parcel at a very keen price indeed. It is a one-off but not to be missed.

Hay Shed Hill

Winemaker Michael Kerrigan, formerly of Madfish and Howard Park, bought this pioneering winery in 2006 so that he could make his own premium wines.

Originally a dairy farm established for returning veterans of World War One, the estate is now named after the hay shed that was originally built in the 1920s as part of the veterans’ foundation and which still stands today. Vines were first planted on the estate in 1973 which make the older plants among the oldest vines in the Margaret River area. The estate sits in the heart of the Wilyabrup sub region, one of the best of the west.

The vineyard is worked sustainably and only the best parcels make it into the premium label, with grapes from parcels that, while excellent, don’t make the demanding final cut bottled under the Pitchfork label. Classic Margaret River varieties are grown; cabernet sauvignon, merlot, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, semillon and riesling, but there are also tempranillo, pinot noir, muscat, grenache, malbec and cabernet franc bottlings too, not to mention bubbly and olive oil!
