The Hugel Alsace Selection Case

The Hugels are known for their long-lived gewürztraminers; this is a powerful and impressive wine from the famous Sporen vineyard. A sensual wine with complex notes of clove, spice and citrus rind – all wrapped in a divine, soft-pillow texture.

We originally offered this wine back in 2016, but it's recently been officially released, approaching its tenth birthday. From the heart of the grand cru vineyard Schoenenbourg, this sensational riesling balances bright mouthwatering acidity, great concentration and length.

The Wine Society has worked with several generations of the Hugel family and it felt entirely natural that we should turn to this famous family for a wine from their home region to celebrate our 150th birthday. A refined blend of Alsace noble grape varieties with the freshness of the 2021 vintage: restrained on the nose, more complex and layered on the palate, with gentle texture underpinned by a backbone of minerality, and fine length. Well-crafted Alsace pinot, with bright black and red-cherry fruit and creamy texture supported by good structure. The house of Hugel is one of the longest-established in Alsace as well as being one of the most famous, with a history of winemaking in the beautiful village of Riquewihr since 1639.
