Elio Perrone
The Perrone family has been producing moscato here, on the hills to the south of Asti in north-western Italy, since the end of the 19th century. The current – fifth – generation is Stefano Perrone, who used to be a racing driver, but took over this interesting family estate in 1989. Ever since, he has been instrumental in creating the estate’s reputation for unfaltering quality and distinctive personal style.
The family has 13 hectares of vineyards, situated at 350 metres above sea level, which benefit from plenty of sunshine. There are small amounts of chardonnay and some terrific old-vine barbera, but the star remains the moscato grape used to make their light, sparkling wines, which now include single-vineyard varieties.
The one we stock is from a single vineyard called Sourgal and is the finest moscato we know.
