Mount Mary sits comfortably among the very top tier of Australia’s most revered fine wine producers. This small Yarra Valley estate retains a sense of modesty and mystery, and while it lacks the mass-market visibility of larger names, it’s regarded as an icon by those in the inner-circle of Australian fine-wine fandom, which in part explains its superb relative value. Triolet is their white Bordeaux blend, 65% sauvignon blanc, 25% semillon and 10% muscadelle in 2019 and it’s a smart, focused and stylish wine. The nose shows a mineral drive with notes of lanolin, almond, jasmine, lemongrass and lime. The palate is beautifully poised, with bright acidity and finely judged weight. A stony, savoury edge underpins lemon pith, delicate stone fruit and lime zest, while a gentle creaminess adds polish. Produced in tiny quantities, this is a wine people buy to drink, not trade and that only adds to its appeal. Surely the greatest white Bordeaux blend in Australia.
