Prophet's Rock Central Otago Pinot Gris 2023
White Wine from New Zealand - Central Otago
Prophet's Rock is one of the great small estates of Central Otago, run by Paul Pujol. Pujol has previously worked in Burgundy and Oregon as well as Alsace. The former two have something to do with his mastery of pinot noir, perhaps the most famous variety for this cool climate New Zealand region, however his affinity for varieties such as pinot gris and riesling doubtless stem from his time working in the latter. 2023 was a great vintage for Central Otago and when buyer Freddy Bulmer tasted this at the winery with Paul he was thrilled with the quality, saying the fruit was 'stunning'. The nose shows honey and ginger with delicious notes of peaches and apricots. The palate is textured, with great depth of juicy pure fruit. Notes of mango and lime complement each other and are held together by a beautifully pure and vibrant acidity. One of the great examples of the grape in the world.
