Reyneke Syrah, Polkadraai Hills 2023

Red Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Reyneke’s 2023 syrah is precision personified, with pure redcurrant, blueberry and blackberry fruit on the palate, fine dusty tannins, life-affirming acidity, and intense cracked pepper spice. Cellar it to unlock the briny, peppery, black olive complexity. Certified biodynamic with Demeter and organic with Ecocert, and for working to reduce their carbon footprint, Reyneke’s efforts to be as sustainable as possible make them a shoo-in as a Wine Society Pioneer. Water conservation is a big issue here in drought hit South Africa and Reyneke use only drip irrigation, mostly from run-off dams and only when necessary while measuring its use so they know that they use 50% less than when they farmed conventionally. New vineyards are being designed to capture and use water with maximum efficiency. The introduction of a bio-reactor means that water and other waste has a second use on the farm in compost building and for the cows to drink after independent monitoring. Finally, when bottled the labels are made from agricultural pulp.

Reyneke Wines

Reyneke is an old Stellenbosch property which was established in 1863 but did not bottle its own wine until 1998. Until recently it was wholly owned by the Reyneke family, and current generation biodynamic and surfing specialist Johan Reyneke continues to farm the vineyards.

The property is now in the same stable as Boekenhoutskloof and one of the latter’s former winemaking team, Rudiger Gretschel, has taken the wines to a new level of quality as Cellarmaster, including their first five-star wine in the influential Platter’s Guide 2011, while respecting the environmentally sound philosophies that Johan Reyneke holds so dear.

The estate is a member of South Africa’s Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, WIETA accredited, and makes all its own compost and biodynamic preparations on site. A wide range of grape varieties are planted, including mourvèdre, pinotage, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, with chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc for the whites.

Yet to reach its peak, this Syrah has remarkable depth and vibrancy. Complex yet so fresh with crunchy plum, blackberry, black cherry and sloe, followed by a balsamic turn of sage, thyme and basil....

Dark blackish garnet. Very salty Syrah with engaging ripeness. A wine full of intent and pleasure. Flatters the palate but still has quite a way to go. JancisRobinson.com
