Riesling Kaploen, Frederic Mochel 2015
Made from fruit grown in the Grand Cru of Altenberg, this medium-dry riesling has 32 grams of residual sugar and has a beautiful glycerol texture combined with a tangy acidity and lots of ginger, flowers and ripe stone fruits. They needed to change the name of this wine as local regulations state that only bone-dry wines can be labelled under Altenberg and therefore named this wine after the lieu dit in the cru where most of the fruit comes from, Kaploen. Guillaume Mochel, having take over from his father in 2001, runs this small 10-hectare organic and biodynamic estate in Traenheim, Alsace and is really pushing forward in terms of quality. The wines from the estate have real soul and show a sense of place, offering plenty of precision and balance.
