Saarburger Riesling Alte Reben Trocken, Zilliken 2022

0 star rating 0 Reviews
This almost has the concentration of a Grosses Gewächs (the German version of Grand Cru) wine and does, indeed, come from old vines. There is lovely salinity and tight minerality with some lovely flavours of yellow fruit, and this is a bargain. A dry riesling from the Saar was once unthinkable but are now achieved in every vintage thanks to better husbandry, lower yields and a warmer climate.

Weingut Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken

Forstmeister Geltz-Zilliken is the full name for the estate of Hans-Joachim Zilliken which is based in large part on the fine Saarburger Rausch vineyard. The rieslings form 10 ha are ripe and intense without harshness, and flavours range from cool lemon and lime fruit in Kabinett to nectarine and peach at higher levels. Hanno's daughter, Dorothee, also a wine-maker, trained in Geisenheim, the Pfalz and South Africa, joined him in 2007.
