Few wines have a history as remarkable as Cristal. Created in 1876 for Tsar Alexander II of Russia, its now-famous clear bottle was commissioned so the emperor could inspect its contents and ensure no explosive device had been hidden beneath the base. 150 years later, Cristal remains the benchmark by which prestige Champagne is judged, and we are delighted to offer the highly anticipated 2018 vintage ahead of its arrival this autumn.

While the story behind the bottle is legendary, the 2018 release marks a landmark moment for the wine itself. Faced with one of Champagne's warmest growing seasons, chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon reimagined the blend, expanding his selection from 45 to 57 vineyard parcels to preserve Cristal's defining freshness and precision. A greater proportion of chardonnay, reduced use of oak, earlier bottling and the decision to block malolactic fermentation have all conspired to create a Cristal of remarkable tension and energy, while maintaining the concentration expected from this celebrated cuvée.
This is a wine unlike any previous Cristal. Layers of nectarine, citrus blossom and chalky minerality are complemented by subtle notes of cedar, bergamot and patisserie, before a saline, finely textured palate carries through to an exceptionally long finish. With limited stock this is an opportunity to secure one of Champagne's defining wines.
