Sakkie Mouton 'Dawn of the Salty Tongues' Syrah, Olifants River 2023

Red Wine from South Africa - Olifants River
5.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Sakkie Mouton's 'Dawn of the Salty Tongues' is the perfect description for this intensely saline, kelpy and white-pepper-driven syrah from the cool Olifants River region of South Africa. Just like the label that adorns this bottle this is fun, exciting and totally unique but all managed properly to give an eminently drinkable, hunger inducing red wine. Moderate in body with wonderful purity of blueberry and plum fruit, it's the briny notes to this wine that just kept me going back for me. Best served lightly chilled this got better and better over a period of about five days so we're sure it'll age extremely well.

We're not 100% sure the cartoonish labels match the sheer quality and evocative beauty of the wine here, but maybe we're getting old, and really, what a wine this is. A sinewy but silky tannins and supple Syrah which combines the prettiness of violets, thyme and lavender with hibiscus and raspberry and, yes, a coastal saline quality.

Mauve wax on the top and a very jazzy label to match the intriguing name. Transparent garnet. Light and more Cape than Syrah to my palate. Sweet and sour without those elements being knit.
