Red Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
Always entirely whole-bunch fermented, this has a stunning fragrance, as ever – high-definition and super-charged, with the dial turned up on what is always an incredible spicy, peppery perfume. Expressing freshly ground white, black and pink pepper (but leading with white), red cherry, cranberry and raspberry leaf, this pulses with a raw, unfiltered energy. The palate delivers everything the nose promises and brings in a salty thread, with raspy, moreish, savoury tannins. There is a sandpaper-like feel to the tannin texture, reminiscent of sangiovese tannins in the finest expressions of that grape. Tangy and bright on the finish, this is a triumphant Sons of Sugarland. The best yet. It comes from ten or eleven syrah rows on the now famous Karibib farm in the Polkadraai Hills; select parcels on this farm, including the vines Reenen Borman works with, can be considered a grand cru of Stellenbosch Syrah.
