The Society's Austrian Red 2024
Red Wine from Austria - Lower Austria
This smells immediately inviting, deep and mellow yet lifted by fresh, juicy fruit. Violets, damsons and ripe plums lead the way, followed by a plump, generous palate that balances dark fruit depth with real vibrancy. There’s blackcurrant and cranberry at the core, a gentle peppery note and a subtle hint of tomato leaf, finishing with a pleasing touch of graphite. Matured predominantly in a 2,000-litre old oak vat with a small portion in older small casks, the oak handling has beautifully softened the wine and given it a supple, polished texture. This feels completely ready to drink and is particularly charming and upfront in this vintage. A superb example of zweigelt and probably my favourite release yet. Made by Familie Mantler, it’s a versatile, characterful red that works brilliantly with goulash and offers outstanding value.
