The Wine Society's Generation Series English Chardonnay 2023

4.000000000 star rating 2 Reviews
This unoaked chardonnay from the fantastic 2023 vintage is citrus-driven and pure with notes of sea spray, apple and lime peel. It`s this crisp, easy-drinking style Matthew believes all UK producers should be aiming for. Kent, where this limited-edition Generation Series wine comes from, with its warm, dry climate and chalk soils is particularly well-suited to producing great chardonnays. Please note that the price of this wine is £14.95 and not £16 as erroneously shown in print elsewhere. More on the wine

While English sparkling has been world class for a number of years, it’s the still wines, especially chardonnay, that buyer Matthew Horsley believes will make England a major player in the world of wine in the coming years. It is made for us by Simpsons based in the beautiful Elham Valley just outside Canterbury. Ruth and Charles Simpson were quick to see the potential of the terroir here and had the foresight to plant Burgundian clones on their south-facing vineyards which are better suited to still wine production. They are one of the few English wineries making both still and sparkling wines to a high level. It is their pioneering spirit and determination to reshape the image of English wine which attracted us to them for this project.
