WWF Spring Discovery Whites Case
Wines included
Quinta do Ameal Bico Amarelo, Vinho Verde 2023
An affordable but serious vinho verde, which is a blend of avesso, loureiro and alvarinho grapes from across this Portuguese region. The nose is crisp and fresh with lemon verbena and pear notes. The palate is pure and refreshing, with a touch of fresh mint towards the end.
A. A. Badenhorst Curator White, Coastal Region 2024
Not many under-£10 whites can be described as ‘the whole package, with so many layers and a pleasing balance of freshness and texture.' However, that’s exactly what how our Wine Champions tasters summed up this incredible-value, chenin-led, stone-fruited blend from a South African star. With the texture and rich apricot fruit to handle spice, this is a delight.
Pazo do Mar Blanco, Ribeiro 2023
Ribeiro, shaped by the cool Atlantic breezes of Spain's north-west coast, is fast emerging as one of the country’s most exciting and refined wine regions. Pazo do Mar showcases the region’s charm with a vibrant blend of Galicia’s aromatic native grapes: treixadura, torrontés, albariño, loureira, and godello. The result is a wine that is wonderfully fresh and delicate, with a captivating floral elegance, some aromatic complexity, and a bright, fruity character.
Bolgrad Odesa Chardonnay 2023
Our first Ukranian wine comes from the Odesa region (Odesa being the Ukrainian spelling) and is produced by Bolgrad winery, who are the biggest producer of still wine in the country. The vineyard location benefits from two opposing air masses coming from the fresh water Yalpug lake and the saline Black Sea. Not seeing any oak, this is a fresh and accessible style of chardonnay made from a producer making wine in very challenging circumstances. This example blends the chardonnay with a little aligoté, expect plenty of citrus and stone fruits.
Viognier, Pays d'Oc, Pennautier 2024
Delicately fragrant, soft, full-bodied southern-French white offering tropical-fruit flavours that are round and delicious. Viognier is a northern Rhône varietal but began to be planted further south once new clones were available. It needs slightly cooler areas so planting near the beautiful city of Carcassonne is perfect.
Gambellara Classico, Monopolio 2024
Only a few miles east of Soave in Italy is the much smaller district of Gambellara, where great hillside parcels of garganega are used to make this elegant, crisp white wine. An attractive citrus and pear-flavoured wine, with a dry, linear style and a moreish salinity. Lovely with pasta in creamy sauces. The Cantina of Gambellara was founded in 1947 and has nearly 300 members farming 600 hectares in the small denomination on the border between the provinces of Vicenza and Verona, only a few miles east of Soave. They merged in 2015 with the Cantina dei Colli Vicentini and the talented Alberto Marchisio is now responsible for winemaking. He has selected the best grapes from the volcanic hills of the denomination's natural amphitheatre to make this Gambellara Classico.
