WWF Summer Worldwide Mixed Dozen
Wines included
The Society's Exhibition Barossa Shiraz 2023
This is a vibrant, medium bodied and aromatic shiraz which is a clever take on the style from Barossa before the 80s and 90s, when the trend for big, OTT and high-alcohol wines set-in. This is bursting with violets, purple fruit and pepper on the nose. The palate is fresh, zesty and juicy, with a floral finish. We wanted to show the elegance that Barossa shiraz is capable of, and one name stood out to create this – Whistler.
Inviniti Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2024
This New Zealand sauvignon is aromatic, citrusy, gooseberry and passionfruit-driven, with a crisp, refreshing lime character and juicy flavour on the palate. Made by the excellent Lawson's Dry Hills team, who are making serious strides in reducing carbon emissions and protecting their local environment. With independently certified carbon zero and environmental management certifications, this wine is in a lightweight bottle with 60% recycled content and packed in cartons made from sustainably managed forests.
Alma de Tinto Mencía, Monterrei 2023
Wild-berry aromas, dusky red florals, and subtle hints of pepper and earth, this light, vibrant red captures the essence of the mencía grape, native to north-west Spain. Its juicy, elegant profile makes it a perfect choice for fans of pinot noir or gamay-style wines.
Perdebee Shiraz-Cinsault, Darling Hills 2022
Cooler-climate shiraz from the relatively newly designated Darling Hills ward, with aromatic black fruit, elegant tannins, and the sprinkling of pepper and spice typical of the region. The wine is named Perdebee for the wasps that act as predators of pests in the vineyard.
The Society's Sicilian White 2024
This unique blend especially created for The Wine Society is 80% grillo, which gives a lovely rich apricot and peach-fruit flavour to this crisp Sicilian white, with 20% carricante, which lifts the freshness while adding an elegant mineral note to the perfume. Enjoy this versatile wine straight from the fridge or with food such as zingy salads, simply grilled seafood, chicken dishes, creamy pasta or risottos.
Valpolicella, Torre del Falasco 2024
Valpolicella, from the Veneto province, is one of Italy's best-known wines and this delightful example comes from an excellently run local co-operative in the region. Made in a bright, modern style, this delivers an uncomplicated, light-bodied glassful of cherry-fruit charm. Juicy and vibrant, with gentle tannins, it can be enjoyed on its own or with food. Try lightly chilled.
Miles Mossop The Introduction Chenin Blanc, Stellenbosch 2023
'The Introduction' perhaps does this pure and textured chenin blanc a slight disservice as it's more than capable of being the main event. Lime-peel, melon and a lick of peach on the finish this is racy and pure from Wine Society favourite, Miles Mossop.
The Society's California Old-Vine Zinfandel 2023
This classic California zinfandel is created for us by Delicato Family Vineyards from some of their oldest vines in Lodi, which explains its concentration and class. The aromas include black cherry, intense mixed spice and lots of juicy berry fruit. On the palate, it`s full-bodied and satisfying, and makes a great partner for Mediterranean-style cooking, grilled meats, dishes where herbs play a prominent role, burgers or even curry: the perfect house red! Fruit from old bush vines is used to make this wine, yielding less but with grapes of higher concentration. These gnarled and knotted old vines are more abundant in California than almost anywhere else in the world and deserve their place on the label of our zin.
Emiliana Silbador Gran Reserva Casablanca Viognier 2022
Emiliana owns vineyards throughout the valleys that make up Chile’s best winemaking areas. This ripe, peachy viognier benefits from the cool breezes of the Casablanca valley, ensuring freshness.
Château de la Grave ‘Grains Fins’, Côtes de Bourg 2024
Philippe and Valérie Bassereau, long time suppliers of the Society for excellent, good value red, have been making a small quantity of original white for several years. They started with around 3 acres in 1997 and have planted steadily since. Traditional semillon is the base, but here it is accompanied by c. 30% colombard, something of a speciality in the Bourg appellation. The wine is part fermented and matured in large oak barrels which add creamy texture but do not risk masking the delightful aromas and flavours of white fruits and flowers.
Château de la Grave ‘Caractère', Côtes de Bourg 2021
From a member-favourite estate from the perfumed 2021 vintage this has a fragrant bouquet of plums, tar and vanilla, with a layered, juicy texture on the palate, concentrated and well balanced with grainy, ripe tannins on the finish. Remarkable value. We are excited to say that the Bassereaus are one of our Wine Society Pioneers for their focus on sustainable methods in wine production. They manage water use carefully, treating waste water and discharging it back, all winery waste is composted, dry hedges are built. As winners of our 2024 Climate & Nature fund, de la Grave will use our funds to help diversify and move away from a monoculture. One project involves planting fruit, olive and truffle trees, establishing pre-orchards which will combine fruiting trees with meadows for grazing and breeding their sheep and horses. They are supported by the local biodynamic organisation and share their knowledge with other producers, and their area was chosen for ‘blue corridors’ thanks to ponds and waterways being reopened for animals who need that environment to thrive and migrate. this makes a wonderful partner for roasted spring lamb shoulder or leg with all the trimmings, and is superb with a thick-cut, well-seared but still rosy rib-eye steak.
Sylvaner Reserve, Cave de Turckheim 2023
From a co-operative that is highly regarded in the Alsace region and beyond, the Reserve range comes from grapes grown on vines planted on flinty soils, which gives additional salinity and concentration to the wine. This sylvaner is a delightful wine that offers lots of citrus, white flowers and stony notes. Perfect with olives, soft goats cheese or drinking without food.
