I am always interested in talking and finding out about the latest in sustainability. There have been many dinner parties where groans can be heard from my wife as I bring up my latest packaging and recycling stats! But I appreciate that not all our members are like me. Some are mildly curious, some will want to learn and absorb every detail, some may not be interested at all – and everything in-between.
Read our annual sustainability report 2023/24
Two years into our sustainability journey, we want to share the progress we’ve made and what to expect over the next 12 months.
On our Sustainability hub and in our quarterly newsletter, we try to break down the main messages into clear, engaging articles and features, whether that’s a glossary to explain common sustainability words, or taking a deep dive into the realities of recycling.
But when it comes to reporting back to members about what we are doing at The Wine Society, I think the most important things are truth and transparency. I want to tell you about exactly how we’re working towards our sustainability goals and be open about the challenges along the way.
We’re all too aware of the dangers of greenwashing, which is why we want our members to have access to the facts and figures behind everything we do. We’ll never speak in generalisations about what we do or what we’re aiming to do – we’ll tell you, in detail, about exactly what we’ve actually done, and how we’ve done it. This means you can hold us to account on our progress.
We also want to add to the growing wealth of information, knowledge and ideas to help those on a similar journey. We are not perfect, so the more we share and learn from each other, the better.
So, in our full report, you’ll notice two things:
- We don’t skimp on the detail – it’s a long report with separate sections on how we’re protecting our environment, tackling human rights in the supply chain, looking after our own people and showing leadership.
- If we use terms like carbon emissions, lightweighting bottles or life cycle assessment, we’ll take the time to explain what we mean, using a simple diagram or illustration where helpful.
This means it’s a lengthy read, but we think it’s worth it.
However, if you just want the highlights, that’s fine too! Just skip to page 4 to see an at-a-glance guide to everything we did in the last twelve months – and look at page 37 to see what we’ve got planned next.
