The buyer’s triage: picking out Italy’s little gems
Tasting with Francesco Ripaccioli at Canalicchio di Sopra, Tuscany

Italy is one of the world’s most complex and fascinating wine countries. Hundreds of indigenous grape varieties, dozens of celebrated regions, and a patchwork of appellations can make it feel overwhelming even for experienced wine lovers. I see my role as buyer to make the Italian selection for The Wine Society with exactly that in mind. I really try to triage the range, to bring clarity to the country’s diversity and ensure that every bottle listed is one I genuinely enjoy, often(!) drink, and frequently recommend. I hope this, plus The Society’s Promise really allow you to explore Italy’s tremendous treasure trove with total confidence.

Within this Spotlight offer, the section of classic small wonders is perhaps most illustrative of this approach. A journey through Italy’s most iconic regions, guided by producers who consistently excel. In Tuscany, FontodiIsole e OlenaCanalicchio di Sopra and Poggio al Tesoro demonstrate the elegance, depth and precision of Chianti Classico, Brunello and Bolgheri.

Piedmont is represented by MassolinoG.D. Vajra and Silvano Bolmida, whose Barolo and Barbaresco combine power, perfume and finesse. In Alto AdigeElena Walch brings clarity and aromatic lift, while Poderi Colla crafts reds of structure and grace. Meanwhile, Feudi di San Gregorio in Campania illustrates how lesser-known reds and whites can deliver typicity, balance and charm, even at approachable prices.

What unites these producers is their unwavering commitment to site and tradition. Each bottle tells a story – of sun-drenched hills, centuries-old vines, careful vineyard management, and winemaking that seeks to highlight rather than obscure. By focusing on estates of this calibre, I hope to make Italy’s richness accessible, allowing members to explore its greatest classics with confidence.
