Egon’s home and winery in the Saar Valley looks out to the steep, slate-dominant slope of the Scharzhofberger. The region is slightly cooler than the Mosel Valley, so the wines tend to have a racier acidity and a flinty, saline quality rather than the jasmine, featherlight character that you would typically expect from the Mosel.
This winery has been in the family for nearly 230 years, and Egon has recently been joined by his children Egon Müller V and his daughter Isabelle Müller. They have remained faithful for decades to the commitment to the soil and their terroir, adopting a minimal interventionist approach in the winery to produce the very best expression of riesling that they can.

These wines are not inexpensive and the volumes available are extremely limited, so it can be challenging to find and offer the wines to our members at reasonable prices. I am thrilled therefore to be able to offer a three-bottle mixed case of some recent vintages of the Scharzhofberger Kabinett, 2020, 2022 and 2023, In-bond. The 2020 and 2022 are similar in style with the sunshine of the vintage coming through, with the energy and crystalline profile of the cooler 2023 evident in the bottle.
