Roberto Santana calls this his finest vintage yet of Santa de Ursula, a perfumed, focused blend of listán negro and negramol from three parcels in Tacoronte’s Corujera area. The vines, all over 100 years old, sit on sandy clay atop red basalt bedrock, drawing character from the volcanic, Atlantic-influenced terroir of Tenerife. On the nose and palate, wet stone, violet and rose petals are mingled with juicy red cherry and blackcurrant fruit. Partial carbonic maceration adds a lift of brightness to this otherwise serious wine, while chewy tannins, lifted by stems in tank, make it remarkably food-friendly. The result is a wine that is mineral, fresh, and elegantly powerful. Drink this year to 2033. 12%
