Bodegas Don Balbino Reserva, Rioja 1987
From a little-known producer in Laguardia, this is a wonderful example of fully mature Rioja from the excellent 1987 vintage. These rare bottles were discovered in the cellar of a traditional delicatessen built above an ancient Arab settlement, where they had rested undisturbed for decades before the family closed the business when the next generation chose not to continue it. Now fully mature, the wine displays a beautiful garnet hue with an expressive nose of dried cherries, fig and damson, with smoky notes and the savoury complexity of fine old leather. With plenty of tertiary character, it is still remarkably vibrant, with freshness and finesse, finishing very long indeed. A rare opportunity to enjoy perfectly cellared, mature Rioja with all the character that only time can bring. Could be a great gift for someone enjoying their 40th birthday or anniversary next year!
