Cahors, Grand Coutale 2020

Red Wine from France - SW France (excl. Bordeaux)
3.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Château Coutale is one of the longest established and best located estates in Cahors, with a reputation for making polished, classy reds with the capacity to age. This is the top cuvée, which is fragrant, with fine, polished tannins and a long finish – a far cry from the muscular, tannic wines of yesteryear. Pair with venison or game.

Clos de la Coutale

Cahors has been famous for its sturdy reds since the Middle Ages. Its success is based on the malbec grape which here is known as the auxerrois. This thrives in conditions where summers are generally warmer and drier than in Bordeaux making wines that are fuller-bodied.

The Bernède family have worked the 38 hectares at Clos La Coutale, situated on the best soil in the Lot Valley, for six generations. The vineyards are south-west facing and protected from the cold winds that come down off the Causses plateaux of the Massif Centrale, so that the grapes ripen well and a shade earlier than some parts of Cahors.

The Daily Telegraph

Finely fragranced, judiciously oaked and atmospheric, this is a top-notch Cahors that I’d definitely want to have up my sleeve if duck, game or roast beef were on the menu.

This rich, classic cahors melds dark fruit and liquorice with savoury, grippy tannins and a good structure.
