Pierre Gimonnet

Côte des Blancs, as the name suggests, is all about chardonnay, and all Gimonnet’s wines are 100% chardonnay. The Gimonnets are based in the village of Cuis but also have vineyards in the premier cru site Vertus and in the grand cru villages of Cramant, Chouilly and Oger, with some 40 plots of land in all and a total of 28 hectares.

Olivier and Didier Gimonnet play on the different variations of terroir within these sites to give each of their Champagnes a true sense of place. Common to all their Champagnes however is finesse, minerality, elegance and freshness.

The fruit for the non-vintage Champagne comes from Cuis, which tends to make a delicate fruity style of wine. What is unusual here is the reserve wine which is added, drawn from several vintages, and kept in bottle rather than tank or vat. The result is a wine of great complexity and length of flavour.

I love thisChampagne. It’s one I’ve enjoyed before ... It’s also stunning value for money.Interestingly, it has ‘Chardonnay’ on the front label. I wasn’t aware that thiswas allowed in Champagne, and I’m not sure the CIVC are massively keen on it.This bottling is 72% 2011, with the balance from four vintages back to 2006.Delicate, fine toasty notes on the nose. Real finesse, in a pure, precise stylewith bright citrus and white peach fruit. This is such a pure wine with realfinesse.

Bubbles to get theparty started. A masterful 100% Chardonnay cuvee that's full of nervy energywith savoury pastry shop richness providing the bass notes to go with the stonefruit, hazelnut and lemon. One of the most toothsome grower-producer Champagneswith some real depth to it. Do not hesitate. Marvellous as an aperitif withsome amuse-bouches/gueules or to complement dim sum, raw oysters, fish andchips, seafood, sushi or the Boxing Day curry. A true connoisseur's Champagneand a great wine for Christmas turkey too.

The Gimonnets havegrown vines since 1750, but only started bottling their own in Cuis in 1935.They now own a sizeable 28 hectares, making eight Champagnes. Many of the vinesare over 40 years old which Didier Gimonnet says reduces yield, increases ripenessand concentrates fruit. Cuis Champagne is on the lighter side, but they havecrispness, minerality and pure chardonnay fruits.

Star buy: TheGimmonets have grown vines since 1750, but started bottling their own fizz inCuis in the 1930’s.  One of the larger growers, they own 28 hectaresmaking 8 different Champagnes.  The key is their old vines, most over 40years old which Didier Gimmonet says helps grape ripeness and concentratesfruits.  This is on the lighter side with crisp minerality, purechardonnay fruits and rich nutty finish.

100% chardonnay,Didier Gimonnet's aspiration for his entry NV is a cuvée with attack on thefront, roundness in the middle and crispness on the end. The singularexpression of his home village in Cuis, it is softened with reserves of theprevious year's blend, aged in magnums. The result is the quintessentialaperitif, and one of the most pristine Champagnes for its price. Thenorth-facing elegance of this village lets fine salt-chalk minerality sing inharmony with crystalline acidity.
