Château Fourcas-Borie, Listrac 2016

Red Wine from France - Bordeaux
3.428571500 star rating 21 Reviews
From a fine property owned by Bruno Borie of Ducru Beaucaillou from the outstanding 2016 vintage this is at the perfect point of maturity, balancing the power and dark-fruit from this warm vintage with the savoury spice and cigar notes form maturation. A blend of 68% merlot, 21% cabernet sauvignon, and 11% petit verdot with 12 months in oak of which 20% was new this is the perfect accompaniment to your Autumnal recipes. Still showing plenty of colour and depth we'd recommend decanting for an hour before drinking to really show this classy Listrac at its best.

Château Fourcas-Borie

Since the Borie family of Ducru-Beaucaillou took over this property, previously named Fourcas-Dumont, in 2009, they have made a good wine even better. It is situated in the north of Listrac, a commune in the Haut-Médoc, with around half of its 30 hectares of vineyards on the hilltops of Moulin du Bourg and Fourcas. The vines have an average age of 30 years.

The wine is the creation of Bruno Borie, a true individual, who took over much of the Borie family winemaking in 2003 when his father died. He uses temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats of various sizes which allows for different vineyard plots to be vinified separately.

The spicy, bright, well-structured Fourcas-Borie is a blend of 70% merlot with 15% each of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. It is aged for 12 months in oak, up to half of which is new, and will keep well for between four and 10 years.

Is there any finer pairing for the Easter weekend than roast spring lamb and a red bordeaux? It's worth paying a little more for something with good bottle age from an outstanding vintage, and this classic merlot-heavy claret is worth every penny. It has lashings of juicy dark fruit, with gentle aromas of spice and tobacco.

Healthy, sweet, perfumed claret with real concentration. Obviously a very good vintage. For now, or the future. JancisRobinson.com
