Château Raymond-Lafon

This estate gets its name from its 19th century founder. Since 1972 it has been in the Meslier family – initially Pierre Meslier, who was for many years general manager at Yquem, and who applied the same rigorous standards to Raymond-Lafon from the outset. In recent years he and his wife have passed control to their children, Marie-Françoise, Jean-Pierre and Charles-Henri, the latter of which manages the vineyards and the winery.

The 16 hectares of vines mostly surround the château, and are planted on clay-gravel soils. Grapes are harvested one by one, ensuring only those with the right level of noble rot are selected, in between three and 10 successive pickings.

The blend is generally 80% semillon and 20% sauvignon, which spends three years in barrels, 80-100% of them new. It can age for between five and 25 years.

The only problem used to be that price was rather high, but in recent years the quality has been excellent and the price more reasonable.

I cannot believe the price quoted here is for a full 75cl bottle, not a half bottle. Raymond-Lafon is one of t he finest sweet wine properties on Earth, and this is not surprising when you learn that it is situated smack bang next to Chateau d'Yquem. You can pour 10 good lasses from a bottle, making it marginally cheaper than half a lager in a West End pub. A golden nectar with mandarin and honey themes and a length of flavour that will take you from Christmas Day into Boxing Day without even blinking, this is a steal, and you must not waste a second in securing your stock. I am the last person you would find giving a bottle of this wine away, but for £24 I cannot think of a finer nor more festive Christmas gift.

Typical Christmas fare often concludes with a substantial dessert and that demands wine of comparable weight. Fortunately, the sweet wines of Bordeaux continue to meet that need with suitable style and depth. Owned by a former general manger at Chateau Yquem, this Chateau is acknowledged as producing top level Sauternes and this luxury option from The Wine Society will not disappoint. Aromatic and golden in colour, it provides classic mango, peach and honey flavours with ripe grapefruit centred acidity to create a glorious counterbalance to its weightiness – and avoid any sweetness overload.

Full bottle and very sweet. Maybe just not quite enough acidity but a fantastic price for such a wine … Good value. 16/20
