Boiron (Bosquet des Papes)

At Bosquet des Papes, there is no mistaking that here is an essential part of Provence. The welcome is always warm and friendly and, not surprisingly, the Boirons have a large, loyal local customer base. Customer reception, between two rows of large oak foudres, is always a hive of activity.

The wines are very traditional: big, muscular and heartwarming. The Wine Society has been buying from the estate for more than 25 years.

At first we bought from Maurice, whose wines sometimes lacked a little finesse and consistency. That changed when his son Nicolas took the helm. His greater ambition has allowed the estate to maximise the huge potential of its vineyards, which are situated in prime locations within their 30 hectares made up of widely scattered plots. This plays to the wine’s advantage, with a multiplicity of different terroirs, each offering subtle and varied nuances of taste.

Nicolas is a huge man, a second-row forward of a figure, and the wines have grown with him. These are well-crafted Châteauneufs, mightily powerful and splendidly rich but with surprising finesse and elegance too, and endowed with a big tannic structure that ensures great keeping potential.
