Domaine Giraud

Though only founded in 1974 this domaine has shown its mettle very quickly in the great scheme of things. It was established by Pierre and Mireille Giraud, who were running a distillery when they rented just 4 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape vines just over 40 years ago. They built up the estate and eventually converted the distillery into a winery, passing on their enthusiasm to their children Marie and François until they took over the running of the domaine in 1998.

Today the family own 30 hectares of vines, some of them 100 years old. It is Marie who makes the wine while François keeps a watchful eye on the sustainably farmed vineyards, even introducing some biodynamic practices into the viticulture. He ensures that the fruit reflects the terroir and Marie ensures that the wines reflect the fruit. Grenache, mostly from old vines and the best sites, plays a dominant role in all their wines and the style is one of opulence and generosity without ever descending into corpulence and flab.
