Corison Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Red Wine from USA - California
Cathy Corison makes extraordinarily elegant and poised Napa cabernets, and in this classic Napa vintage her wine retains great energy and freshness. On the palate there are delicious and precise flavours of cassis, cherry and leather, supported by refreshing acidity and youthful tannins that will integrate with time. California Vintage 2014

In Sonoma, after a moderately warm, dry summer, heat levels really began to rise in September/October, prompting an earlier than usual harvest. Napa had a tricky vintage - budburst was early, and the crop was fast ripening, although summer was largely free of extreme heat. But freak hailstorms and some rain at harvest made the decision on when to pick difficult. Many vineyards were also affected by this year's earthquakes.

Spiced aromatics ofmixed fruits across a full range of colour – red, blue and black fruits appearhere with a constellation of fresh herbs, all of which carry into the palate. The oak usage here is well done, framing the varietal character rather thandominating, instead bringing the earthy and herbal notes of the variety intohighlight over a body of fruits and mineral notes. Ferric tones here act as apatina accent. Impressively long finish. Delicious. 2014 as a vintage has lessstrength than the rather ideal 2013 but Corison has shown here in 2014 how defther winemaking is. The oak is very slightly more apparent than it is in 2013but that feels appropriate to the vintage and well balanced to what it has tooffer. There is slightly more acidity, slightly more up-front delivery here butthis is not a weak vintage, just a very slightly less structural one. This is adelicious, nicely done Corison, as should be expected from the producer.
