Château Léoube
This beautiful and ancient Provençal estate of 560 hectares is now owned by the founders of Daylesford Organic, one of Britain’s leading sustainable farms, who bought the land and 15th century house in a ruined state in 1997.
Naturally enough, if you’ll excuse the pun, Sir Charles and Lady Carol Bamford brought their passion for all things environmentally friendly to the Léoube vineyards, which comprise 65 hectares, and their olive groves, a further 20 hectares, all organically farmed.
The soils are a mix of clay and schist and their proximity to the sea at the Côte d’Azur, and the breezes it generates, moderates the heat of the Mediterranean climate here. Furthermore, night temperatures are cool enough to allow the grapes to retain their fresh aromatics and flavours until they are hand-picked, sorted and gently pressed before fermentation is in stainless steel. Romain Ott is the young winemaker charged with the task of showing off this superb terroir.
