Finca Míllara Lagariza, Ribeira Sacra 2023

Red Wine from Spain - Galicia & Bierzo
4.500000000 star rating 6 Reviews
Finca Míllara Lagariza is a vibrant, youthful expression of Mencía, coming from the unique terroir of Ribeira Sacra, where hand-built stone terraces climb up from the Miño River. The region’s schist soils offer excellent drainage, resulting in a small but top-quality production from just 11 hectares. The label proudly carries the term 'viticultura heroica', reflecting the labour-intensive, steep-slope viticulture of the area. The wine is fresh and lively, with soft tannins and juicy red berry fruit, along with subtle notes of violets, wild raspberry, and a hint of white pepper. Clean, elegant, and full of charm, Finca Míllara Lagariza is a hidden gem, showing off the talent of up-and-coming winemaker Iván Olmeda. Match the mencía grape’s high-octane, spicy vibrancy with hotter curries such as Madras or Rogan Josh. Its lively fruit and spice-friendly profile highlight the intricate flavours and heat of the dish, and make each bite mouthwateringly fresh.

Finca Millara

Finca Millara is a recovery project in Ribeira Sacra, a relatively small DO in Spain's north-west. With 200 hectares of land, there is 21ha of vineyard on stone terraces with the main part overlooking –and almost falling into – the Minho river.

Altitude is 1,000m on average, with only red grapes planted (predominantly mencia but also some tempranillo and samso). There had been some vines before Finca Millara was set up but as in most remote viticultural regions they were abandoned at the time of phylloxera.

Whilst the winery is mainly north facing the vineyards are south faced yet benefiting from the freshness brought about by the river down the slopes and the altitude.

Slightly sludgy dark garnet. Not as obviously alluring as the Bierzo above (Luna Beberide Mencía 2025), but it’s clearly – from both back story and what’s in the glass – a wine with a story. Brambles and complexity. And a bit of dry chew on the end. JancisRobinson.com

From a restored estate in Ribeira Sacra and a producer awarded the title ‘Galician young winemaker of the year’ by Tim Atkin MW, a delicious example of Mencía, a red grape that’s very much in vogue. The nose offers bright berry fruit, while in the mouth there’s crunchy freshness and herbal complexity, with sleek tannins and a lovely moreish granite-like mineral note to the finish. Pair with octopus for an authentic Galician experience.
