Fleurie Poncie, Domaine Philippe Viet 2024
Red Wine from France - Beaujolais
Philippe Viet is another of Beaujolais's rising stars, establishing his eponymous domaine in 2019 having bid the corporate world goodbye to follow a passion catalysed by the original pioneers of fine, low-interventional Beaujolais, including Jean Foillard. He now farms eight hectares, with his biggest vineyard holding in Régnié. But it is his Fleurie Poncié that we feature here after a previous vintage captivated buyer Victoria Mason when poured from magnum at the Bien Boire en Beaujolais event in April. A silky, fine, utterly elegant expression of this exceptional lieu-dit in Fleurie (surely headed for premier cru status), this has rose-petal perfume and glistening raspberry and strawberry fruit, with an inner harmony and long, fragrant finish. Working organically in the vineyards and with whole-bunch fermentation and gentle extraction in the cellar, Philippe's wines capture the places they are grown with clarity and honesty.
