Grabenwerkstatt Wachauwerk Grüner Veltliner, Wachau 2024

White Wine from Austria - Lower Austria
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Wachauwerk 2024 continues to show how compelling Grüner Veltliner can be thanks to thoughtful, precise winemaking. This comes from a network of low-yielding vineyards near the Danube, including a parcel of 40-year-old vines on the flatter, warmer soils around Mautern. These sites bring a touch more early-drinking generosity than Grabenwerkstatt’s cooler valley holdings, but without compromising clarity or finesse. On the nose, it’s currently tight and shows a little reduction, but already shows its cards: bright citrus zest, crushed white pepper and a vivid, almost ginger-like spiciness, typical of Mautern’s mineral-rich soils. There’s a sense of grip and intensity, with a salty, stony drive beneath the fruit. The palate is structured and finely etched, with a tension between its savoury spice and succulent fruit core that gives the wine both immediacy and the promise of development. There’s no overt oak character here, just pure, linear grüner, crafted with precision and intent, with large old oak barrels softening out the pallet ever-so-slightly. With air or a little time in bottle, this will unfurl beautifully, revealing further nuance and aromatic lift. A serious, terroir-driven white that punches well above its level. Drink from 2026 to 2035. 12.5%

Grabenwerkstatt

Franz Hofbauer, and Michale Linke are old mates, enthusiasts with bags of experience around the world of wine that includes New Zealand’s famous Felton Road estate. They got together in 2014 to make wine in a small village at the western end, one might say the unusual end, of the Wachau in Austria, basing themselves in the small village of Trandorf, where Franz grew up.

They happily took over the management of a handful of vines, some of them in a derelict vineyard that they needed to give some TLC, and The winery's five single vineyard plots all sit within a side valley of the Wachau and are incredibly steep, labour intensive but rewarding sites, producing grapes with mineral freshness, intensity and great potential for ageing.

They farm along biodynamic principles, though they haven’t sought certification for it, and believe in a hands-off approach, don’t overdo the sulfur and don’t fine or filter.
