Heredad de Baroja Gran Baroja Gran Reserva, Rioja 2011
Gran Baroja is the flagship cuvée of Bodegas Heredad de Baroja, made from the estate's finest tempranillo grown around the high-altitude village of Elvillar de Álava. From the warm, generous 2011 vintage, this beautifully mature parcel was released to us from the cellar of a fine wine merchant in San Sebastián, since the Spanish consumers generally don’t favour mature wines. Aged for two years in French and American oak before a further three years in bottle, it has plenty of life still, combining ripe fruit with dried herbs, balsamic notes and a touch of rustic charm. Firm, chalky tannins provide structure, while its freshness and poise suggest there is still more to come. Plenty of character and drinking pleasure.
