Jessica Saurwein has been making thrilling pinot for just over a decade now, with 2015 her debut vintage of Nom – which comes from a magical 2.5-hectare vineyard in the Overberg, in the little-known Wine of Origin Elandskloof. This is a vineyard she has a deep connection to, having been involved in its planting in her third year at university when she was working at Bouchard Finlayson. The high-altitude block sits at 700m above sea level, on red oxidised clay shale soils with quartzite and sandstone veins. The 2024 rendition of Nom is just gorgeous, with incredible power and concentration (in pinot terms), displaying ripe red cherry and strawberry fruit and rose-petal perfume, together with a flourish of exotic spice. This has immaculate fruit purity, vibrant freshness, and beautiful texture. It is easy to understand why Jessica sees this vineyard as having a ‘mythical’ aura.
