Maccabeu, Rancio Sec, Domaine de Rancy 2011 50cl

White Wine from France - Roussillon
0 star rating 0 Reviews
A Catalan speciality, made from 100-year-old maccabeu vines and aged in cask in the cellars and out in the open in demijohns to get the rancio taste! Very concentrated, with piercing acidity and a very long finish. This calls for cured ham or an aged cheese.

Domaine de Rancy

The estate was founded in the 1920's at a time of great demand for fortified wines. Eventually the estate sold all its red grapes to the local coop and concentrated instead on making rancio style wines principally from the maccabeu grape variety.

What is rancio? This is very much the traditional way of ageing fortified wine in the Roussillon, either in old casks or sometimes in glass demijohns, non-topped up so allowing for the wine to come into contact with oxygen over many years. Over time there is evaporation of liquids allowing for both acidity and sugar to concentrate. Like great sherry, these wines are virtually immortal and may gain great complexity with age.

The Verdarguer family have made rancio a speciality and have acquired stocks going back over fifty years. A daughter Delphine has joined the buisiness and has led a revival of table wines especially from grenache and mourvèdre.
